Basement Bathroom Renovation

We bought an original 1970's house with an unfinished basement. It was dark, dingy, and needed a lot of work. We dreamt up a cozy entertainment space, a play area, guest bedroom and a beautiful bathroom. It has been months in the making, but our dreams have finally become a reality. I had so many inspo pics for our bathroom, and it came together even better than I imagined with the help of GROHE Canada! I worked with their team to pick the most beautiful bathroom hardware and plumbing fixtures that have taken our bathroom design to the next level.

GROHE is all about quality, design, technology and sustainability. They provide complete bathroom solutions and kitchen fittings while pushing the boundaries of innovation with water-saving faucets and their SmartControl shower systems. Their pieces are not only forward-thinking, but also beautiful so that you can easily make a statement with a few small upgrades.

Because of its minimal and modern aesthetic, we pulled a lot of pieces from GROHE’s Essence Bathroom Collection, which made it so easy to create a cohesive and consistent style throughout the space. As for the finishes, we loved their new Hard Graphite finish - it’s a bold but neutral tone that is so unique and perfectly complements our concrete tile. The best part about GROHE finishes is the GROHE StarLight coating that easily wipes clean and is made to last so you can enjoy a shiny and beautiful fixture for years to come.

With sleek lines and a single-handle lever, this bathroom Faucet from GROHE’s Essence Collection was the perfect statement piece for our bathroom. It comes in five different finishes that will match any bathroom style, from Hard Graphite to Polished Chrome, to a golden Brushed Cool Sunrise finish. The EcoJoy water-saving technology reduces water usage and the AquaGuide adjustable water flow eliminates splashing for an easy clean up. It also has SilkMove technology that provides superior and smooth handle performance - it’s simple enough for our little girls to use!

I'm officially an adult, because I'm genuinely EXCITED about this toilet from GROHE’s Essence Collection! First off it looks amazing with its minimalistic style that matches the entire collection, plus it has a powerful flushing system but only uses 4.85 litres of water per flush keeping it eco-friendly. It also has an InfinaBright coating that reduces bacteria and build-up, which is a mom’s dream. This bathroom is always going to be full of little kids, so anything to keep it cleaner is a win in my books! What's my favourite toilet feature? The smooth, skirted sides for easy cleaning. Does anyone else hate cleaning the tiny crevices on the sides of a toilet? They're like little dust traps and I'm so glad this toilet doesn't have them! Plus, the skirted sides give it such a great timeless look that can suit any style.

GROHE is renowned for their shower products and you can tell by how much thought goes into each and every feature. I LOVE this SmartControl shower system, especially with kids. It's so easy to use and with just the touch of a button you can pick the desired spray, temperature and adjust the water volume. You push to start and stop, and turn to adjust the water flow. The integrated TurboStat technology prevents any unpleasant temperature fluctuations, and you can also set a SafeStop maximum temperature, which is a must for families so your kids don't have to worry about scalding water. I love this blurb from GROHE’s website, "You can surround yourself with fat, lazy droplets like a summer rain or lend form to the water to massage and soothe away the day. Turn the volume all the way up for a deluge or down to deliver a fine spray." How dreamy does that sound? I can't wait to play around with all of the options this thermostat provides and tell you all about our experience with it!

Perfectly fitting our space and complimenting our Grohtherm® SmartControl trim is the Tempesta Cosmopolitan 100 shower head in Hard Graphite. Our roof in the basement is low and Jason is tall, so we needed a shower head that could be up close to the ceiling. With the Relexa Shower Arm, we were able to create a shower system that works perfectly for our needs. It was easy to install and it can be swiveled to create the perfect angle for whoever is using it.

Bathroom Accessories

Since I wanted to keep a cohesive look to the space, but also loved the minimal modern look of GROHE’s Essentials bathroom accessories, I decided to get the Essentials Paper Holder, Essentials Robe Hook, and the Essentials Towel Ring in Hard Graphite to tie the bathroom together perfectly. I love that the finish is durable so I don't need to worry about any chips or scratches down the road.

Vanity

Our space was limited, so a custom made vanity was exactly what we needed. We got it made by AyA Kitchens Winnipeg in the stain Cashew. It's the perfect wood tone and I love the sleek floating design and the hidden handles. It ties in so well with this space.

Tile

We are very fortunate that Jason does tile for a living so we got a great deal on tile and labor ;). We went with this 30x30 concrete looking tile from Olympia Tile. I love the size and texture of the tile. We added in-floor heat because we knew the floor would be freezing in the basement otherwise. I had seen inspo pics with tile on basically every wall and fell in love. Seemed fitting for a basement, a little moody and cave like.
